Idea Overview

Gorsebrook Park is in desperate need of some TLC. After many years of neglect the park needs help. The park is situated between two public schools, across the street from the IWK Atlantic Canada's largest children's hospital and blocks away from two universities. The park has so much potential and could be a place for physical activity for so many people. The park needs financial help and community elbow grease to bring the park back to it's former glory. The Aviva community fund contribution would be used immediately and the projects would be completed by the end of 2016.

Gorsebrook Park has a dry pad lacrosse box that is not used because it is such bad repair. Funds of approx. $10,000 are needed to repair the surface, paint the boards, paint the surface, repair to the doors and boards and other carpentry work is needed and the purchase of two new 4X4 nets. So much potential just sitting there asking for help.

Gorsebrook has a field that no one uses; it has no markings on it, no nets, just old bleachers and a nicely mowed field that no uses. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in North America. Field Lacrosse is a great sport that is very accessible to all socio-economic groups. It is Canada's National Summer Sport. It has been around for over 500 years and is a huge part of Canada's culture. Halifax does not have a field for lacrosse $20,000 is needed to level the field, seed it, paint the field, purchase proper nets, and replace the bleachers. This is the perfect location for the growing sport.

Gorsebrook Park currently has tennis courts, a basketball court, and two baseball diamonds that are well used. It is a park that invites activity it has several great hiils that are used for sledding in the winter. These hills would be a great part of an outdoor crossfit facility that would benefit all sports participants, residents, and students. At the University of Calgary they have an outside circuit gym that uses body weight for resistance. it would be perfect for Gorsebrook Park and $20,000 would be used to make a world class outside gym that would be accessible to all.

Gorsebrook Park has a concrete square hole in the ground that used to be a water feature more than 20 years ago. Westmount School in the west end of Halifax has a great water feature that would be perfect and what a great place for patients and families to enjoy in the summer.  $20,000 would be used to install the water feature.

Gorsebrook Park has so much potential. We have support from the three levels of government and the community is so supportive. The $70,000 we are asking for would make a huge benefit. The city has offered funds and will assist with the long term maintenance. It is in everyone's best interest to invest in this beautiful park before it is too late and a developer comes along and says this park is run down and not being used so let me build a high rise. It is a gem of a park and so many more people could enjoy it more if we make a difference now.
