The Founders' Cup, Canada's Junior 'B' lacrosse national championship, gets underway on August 16 in Orangeville, Ontario. Eight teams from across the country will compete throughout the week for this prestigious trophy, which will be handed out during the championship finals at the Alder Street Arena on Sunday, August 21.
The host Orangeville Northmen will have a good chance of capturing the title on their home floor, a feat that has not been accomplished since their fellow Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League finalists and Founders' Cup participants the Green Gaels did so in 2000. The last time the Northmen won the cup was in back to back years in 1989 and 1990.
These two OJBLL team's will be in tough against competitors from four other leagues and six Member Associations.
The prairies will be represented by next year's Founders' Cup hosts the Saskatoon SWAT, as well as the Calgary Chill and Manitoba Blizzard, all of which are members of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL). The West Coast Junior Lacrosse League's Coquitlam Adanacs, along with some guest players from the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League, will represent the province of British Columbia, whereas a group of East Coast Junior Lacrosse League (ECJLL) all-stars will wear the Nova Scotia colours. Finally, the undefeated Seneca Warchiefs, last year's silver medalists, will represent the First Nations Junior B Lacrosse League (FNJBLL).
"The host organizing committee has been preparing for the tournament for the past year," said committee chair Nicole Power-Codd. "We are looking forward to welcoming teams from across Canada and look forward to a very competitive and well attended week of lacrosse."
A Junior 'B' national championship has been awarded by the Canadian Lacrosse Association since 1964, with the current Founders' Cup handed out for the first time in 1972. Historically, Ontario-based teams have dominated this event, failing to win only six times.
