Ontario, British Columbia Win Gold at Female Box Lacrosse Nationals in Halifax

OTTAWA, ON - Ontario and British Columbia claimed gold, in the midget and bantam divisions respectively, at the 2018 CLA Female Box Lacrosse National Championships, which wrapped up yesterday Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was the second consecutive year that Canada’s best young female lacrosse players travelled to Halifax for the tournament, which featured seven teams, representing four provinces, across two age divisions.

 

Ontario defeated British Columbia 8-3 to win the midget division crown.

 

B.C. received a bye to the gold medal game after finishing the preliminary round with an undefeated 4-0 record, while Ontario advanced thanks to a narrow 3-1 win over host Nova Scotia in the semi-final game.

 

Tori Verbeek led the way with a two goal, one assist performance, while teammates Erin Rooney, Mackenzie Manuliak, Rachael King and Myah Utrosa each added two points in the finals.

 

Jessica Quinn, who plays her club lacrosse in Kitchener-Waterloo, was the top goaltender in the midget division. She finished the tournament with a 3-1 record, along with an impressive 2.75 goals against average and .892 save percentage.

 

B.C.’s Raegan MacKenzie and Teagan Dunnett led the division with nine points each, while teammate Lauren Black scored a tournament high seven goals.

 

In the bantam division, British Columbia got the better of Alberta, winning a closely contested gold medal game by a score of 5-3.

 

Alberta’s Cassidy Rhodes scored two straight goals to open up the third period and tie things up at 3-3. However, B.C.’s Jordan Baxter, who finished the game with three goals and one assist, replied with two markers of her own in the second half of the frame to put her squad back on top and seal the game.

 

Mya Stewart-Parsons and Elizabeth Roemer added two points each for B.C., while Jenaya Wegner and Sage Runningrabbit joined Rhodes as the leading scores for Alberta with two points apiece.

 

Ontario shutout Nova Scotia 6-0 to win the bantam division bronze medal.

 

Rhodes was the bantam division’s leading scorer with 18 points on 14 goals and 4 assists. Teammate Emily Dodd and Ontario’s Sydney Healey weren’t far behind, finishing with 16 points each.

 

Ontario’s Kamryn Brown was stellar between the pipes, leading the bantam group with a 3-1 record, which included two shutouts, a 1.75 goals against average and .928 save percentage. Alberta’s Kianna Carsolio also posted impressive numbers, allowing only one goal in two wins over Nova Scotia.
