New RBC Olympian Skills Clinic in Halifax provides enhanced training for young athletes

HALIFAX, August 15, 2019 — On September 28, 2019, athletes aged 11-17 are invited to a free sport skills clinic at the RBC Centre in Dartmouth, N.S. where they can learn pro tips from members of the RBC Olympians program.

The RBC Olympian Skills Clinic is a new, special opportunity for youth to learn from local senior competitive athletes from the RBC Olympians program. Through a combination of fitness and classroom sessions, the goal is to inspire youth to maintain a positive attitude in sports, with a focus on having fun.

Participants can choose either a morning or afternoon workshop, and registration is available on a first-come first-served basis.  Sessions will cover advice on how to balance training and optimize performance, along with fitness drills and a nutrition seminar.  RBC Olympians will lead the sessions and connect with the next generation of athletes in the community, to bridge the gap between grassroots sports programs and the Canadian National Team.

The RBC Olympians Program is a national initiative that offers top athletes the opportunity to focus on training and competing while receiving much-needed financial support. The athletes serve as community ambassadors, attending hundreds of community and charitable appearances and bringing the Olympic message of teamwork, excellence and leadership to communities from coast-to-coast-to-coast. The RBC Olympian Skills Clinic is an extension of this investment in athletes and their communities.

RBC Olympians at the clinic will include:
  • Mark James, Sprint Canoe, 23-time National Champion Gold medalist
  • Hannah MacIntosh, Sprint Canoe, 2018 Pan Am Championship bronze medalist, 2017 C2 Silver medalist, World Cup 2
  • Marshall Hughes, Kayak, 2019 Pan Am Games Silver medalist
  • Alex Scott, Kayak, 2018 Pan Am Championship silver medalist, 2019 Senior Worlds team member

Quotes:

“The amateur sport landscape has changed rapidly the past decade, and as athletes who compete on the national and international stage we have been on the forefront. RBC Olympians are in a unique position to give back and help the next generation of upcoming athletes learn from our experiences.”
  • Mark James, RBC Olympian and Sprint Canoe national team member

“As a young athlete it is so easy to focus all your attention on success in sport. Through my career, I have experienced how important it is to have balance, even when training for something as big as the Olympics. The RBC Olympian Skills Clinic will focus on not only optimizing performance but also using the skills you have learned in sport to other aspects of life. This event is something I would have loved as a young athlete, so I’m excited to share the opportunity with some future Olympians!”
-Hannah MacIntosh, RBC Olympian and Sprint Canoe national team member
