Halifax, Nova Scotia-The Halifax Thunderbirds have signed Nova Scotian, Chet Koneczny, to a one-year deal, earning him a spot on the 2019-2020 Inaugural Training Camp roster.

Koneczny enters his seventh season in the National Lacrosse League with stops in Orlando, Washington, Colorado, and Philidelphia.

The defenseman has appeared in 52 games, collecting 22 points and 223 loose balls in his NLL career. An ambassador to the game, Koneczny has also represented Team Czech Republic at the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship and the 2011 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship, with his ancestral ties to the country.

“Chet is a gritty, tough defender,” said Head Coach Mike Accursi. “He is well known for his intensity and no non sense style of lacrosse. Chet has worked with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick lacrosse for many years. When he became available to us, we jumped at the change to add solid defender like Chet. He’s the type of player you hate to play against but love having on your team.”

Born in Truro, Nova Scotia, Koneczny served as the Technical Director for Lacrosse Nova Scotia from 2014-2017, a title he currently holds for for New Brunswick Lacrosse. In 2017, Koneczny continued his coaching career at the Jr B level, with the 2017 Founders’ Cup Champion, Orangeville Jr. B Northmen.

In Sr A ball for Victoria, Koneczny suited up for the Shamrocks in 40 games, collecting 29 points in three seasons of play. The NLL veteran is no stranger to new opportunities in the league, and is excited to see his passion come home to the Province he has dedicated his life to.

“It is an opportunity of a lifetime to have the chance to play at home in front of friends and family, “said Koneczny. “It took the efforts of many dedicated people to make pro lacrosse in Nova Scotia happen, and it is an honour to now be a part of such a storied and forward-thinking lacrosse organization.”
