Ottawa, ON— It was announced today that the Canada Games Council and the 2021 Canada Games Host Society have decided to postpone the 2021 Canada Summer Games until 2022. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the decision was made to protect the health and safety of participants and everyone involved in the Canada Summer Games.

“I am sure the postponement of the 2021 Canada Summer Games was a difficult decision for the Canada Games Council and the 2021 Canada Games Host Society,” stated Wendy Cuthbert, the Canadian Lacrosse Association’s Director of National Championships. “This is a very unfortunate situation, especially for our athletes, coaches, volunteers and host who may be affected by the postponement.”

The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) supports the difficult decision to postpone the 2021 Canada Summer Games. The dates for the Canada Summer Games in 2022 have not yet been confirmed.

“The CLA appreciates there are many questions regarding this announcement and what this means for lacrosse athletes” said Shawn Williams, CLA President. “We ask for your patience at this time and we will ensure that as information becomes available from Canada Summer Games, it will be shared with the lacrosse community.”

Canada Games will be meeting with each National Sport Organization in the coming weeks.

“We will be working closely with the Canada Games Council regarding the 2022 Games and we will relay that information to our Member Associations as soon as possible,” said Wendy Cuthbert.

It has been over 30 years since lacrosse made its appearance in the Canada Summer Games. The CLA is looking forward to once again seeing the game of lacrosse at the Games in 2022.
