Media release: RBC IDEA Lacrosse Fest 2022

Dates:  Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26

The RBC IDEA Lacrosse Fest will welcome youth ages five to 16 in co-ed “try-it” sessions for black, Indigenous, newcomer and 2SLGBTQ+ communities; and also in an all-girl/ non-binary setting. Older youth and adults in under-represented communities are invited to take in coach and referee clinics to learn about lacrosse, and to help as volunteers. A jamboree of introductory, non-competitive games will put everyone’s new skills into action.

During this Lacrosse Fest weekend, there will be a sharing of the Indigenous cultural origins of the game. Lacrosse, at its roots, is a “medicine game,” given to all of us by the Creator to share with the world. Participants will also experience sessions promoting the 2023 North American Indigenous Games, where lacrosse will be a featured component.

“In the past two years, lacrosse volunteers have shown an increased commitment to sharing our sport, keeping those who play motivated and welcoming new and under-represented communities to the game through challenging times,” says Donna Goguen, Lacrosse N.S.’s executive director. “Lacrosse has been and always will be about playing together in a spirit of friendship and respect.

“The RBC IDEA Lacrosse Fest is an opportunity for many under-represented and new Nova Scotians to try the basic skills of lacrosse and learn about the game’s heritage as a part of their cultural group, so they are comfortable and feel welcome.”

Thanks to generous funding partnerships with Jumpstart and the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, Lacrosse N.S. has offered outreach programs through the pandemic with black youth, female-focussed youth and adults, mom & child, multisport and municipal recreation organizations. RBC joining as the title IDEA Lacrosse Fest sponsor further supports these efforts. The IDEA theme, Inclusion – Diversity – Equality – Accessibility, is important to have front and centre as Lacrosse N.S. addresses inequalities and continues its commitment to grow the game.

Details on how to join the RBC IDEA Lacrosse Fest will be shared with organizations and communities in the coming weeks. The volunteer team of lacrosse facilitators and event supporters is now being assembled, ready to meet and welcome everyone at the June weekend events.
