A short History of the Lobster Trap
What a remarkable 40 years we have had with lacrosse in Nova Scotia! Great growth and tremendous opportunity for everyone—to pick up a stick and play.
One very important element over the past 40 years has been the Lobster Trap Midget Lacrosse Tournament. You would be hard pressed to find a true lacrosse fan that has not been involved or touched in some way by the annual affair that offers competition, camaraderie and a taste of renowned Maritime hospitality.
It all started 40 years ago during the spring of 1973, when Wayne Finck invited the Rexdale, Ontario Midgets to Halifax to partake in a planned four-team tournament. Rexdale was one of several teams that had hosted Wayne’s midget team on a ten-day trip the year before. Now the idea was to return the hospitality. Word quickly spread throughout southern Ontario and by July, eight teams were on the way east! In addition to four local teams, squads from St. Catherines (2), Peterborough, Rexdale, Windsor, Nepean, and Whitby (2) gathered in Canada’s best hospitality town to play lacrosse.
The local lacrosse community rallied around the event and the President of Lacrosse Nova Scotia at the time, John Barr, arranged with PetroFina (the forerunner of PetroCanada) to donate the championship trophy. The result was the creation of the Lobster Trap, which continues to be one of the most unique awards in all of sport. The Lobster Trap was competed for annually well into the eighties but as lacrosse waned in Nova Scotia so did the tournament. Following the 1985 competition, the tournament was only played a few times during the next 19 years. The beautifully crafted Lobster Trap rested in several spots, among them the basement and stairwell at Sport Nova Scotia! In 2004, Wayne Finck found the trophy and had it refurbished and placed on display.
In July 2004, just as lacrosse had experienced a resurgence in Nova Scotia over the previous ten years – so did the Lobster Trap Tournament! The tournament committee headed by Bob Friesen worked diligently to restore the legacy of the Lobster Trap to its former stature as one of the Nova Scotia’s premier sporting events.
During 2012, LNSS forged a partnership with a new sponsor, Clearwater Seafoods Limited – one of the premier international providers of wild seafood (and most importantly LOBSTER!). This year we will be rededicating our trophy with an additional plaque honouring our new partnership.
Wayne Finck is now a Nova Scotia Hall of Fame inductee—and the Lobster Trap Legacy is only one of the reasons for that!
Come and join us in 2013 for the 40th Anniversary of the Lobster Trap!!
